Meet Jane Kim

An advocate for working families and social justice, Jane Kim currently serves as the California Director for the Working Families Party and on the Board of Directors for Close the Gap California – a statewide initiative to achieve gender balance in the California Legislature.

In her current role, she is recruiting and training the next generation of leaders willing to stand up to the powerful and fight for working families, and organizing California voters to secure governing power for the many, not just the few.

During her tenure on the Board of Supervisors from 2011 to 2019, Jane represented a district encompassing both the city’s lowest-income residents and its wealthiest zip code. Her progressive track record is evident in groundbreaking initiatives including leading San Francisco to be the first city in the nation to make Community College tuition-free for all residents, enacting the nation’s strongest minimum wage law, securing full-time nurses for homeless shelters, and establishing a medical respite shelter for aging and sick homeless residents. She also led the single largest investment any US city has made towards childcare through a tax on multi-million dollar commercial real estate raising over $140 million annually to make universal affordable childcare a reality.

A longtime champion for affordable housing, Jane crafted the nation’s most robust tenant protection ordinance to prevent unjust evictions. She also led and won the fight to raise the city’s affordable housing mandate from 12% to 25% and secured an unprecedented 40% requirement in three significant development projects within her district.

Following her tenure in office, Jane served as the California Political Director for Bernie 2020 and Senior Fellow at both the Sanders Institute and the Young Elected Officials Network, a program of the People for American Way.

Prior to her work as Supervisor, Jane was a community organizer at Chinatown Community Development Center, a civil rights attorney at Lawyers’ Committee for Civil Rights, and served as President of the San Francisco Board of Education. She received a dual B.A. in Political Science and Asian American studies from Stanford University and her J.D. from the U.C. Berkeley School of Law.

Jane is running for San Francisco Democratic Central Committee to champion the values she believes the Democratic Party should embody – a party that fights, and wins, for all people.
