Jane Kim Urges Scott Wiener to Agree to Run a Positive Campaign

San Francisco, CA – San Francisco Supervisor and State Senate candidate Jane Kim today urged her November opponent, Scott Wiener, to join her in pledging to run a positive campaign.

In a letter to Wiener, Kim noted the many important issues facing the residents of District 11, “Precisely because the challenges are so great, I believe that this election is too important to not focus on the solutions. And I would hope you agree and join me in issuing a pledge not to run any negative advertising during the course of the runoff election.”

By agreeing to this pledge, the candidates would not mention each other in any paid advertisements nor would they issue any personal attacks on their opponents. (Full text of the letter to Wiener and pledge are below.)

“This is a critical time for our region and we need strong leadership in Sacramento to help protect the people of the District and address these key challenges. Voters should have the opportunity to hear both of our ideas and weigh their merits,” wrote Kim. “A positive campaign pledge will help make that a reality.”

Dear Scott,

First of all, I want to congratulate you on advancing to the general election in November. After a spirited primary, I am ready and excited to continue to engage with you on how we can best create a California that works for all of us.

From housing to homelessness to creating middle class jobs to education, the challenges are great. And voters deserve to hear from both of us on how we will address these challenges. Over the years, I’ve been able to secure greater protections for tenants, new levels of affordable housing, more resources for our schools and help for homeless families. And I’ve proposed a number of concrete solutions to help make our District more affordable. I’m looking forward to continuing to discuss these issues with residents of District 11 over the next four months.

Precisely because the challenges are so great, I believe that this election is too important to not focus on the solutions. And I would hope you agree and join me in issuing a pledge not to run any negative advertising during the course of the runoff election. By agreeing to the attached pledge, we will not engage in personal attacks nor mention each other in any mail, television, digital or radio ads.

This is a critical time for our region and we need strong leadership in Sacramento to help protect the people of the District and address these key challenges. Voters should have the opportunity to hear both of our ideas and weigh their merits. A positive campaign pledge will help make that a reality.

Please join me – let’s keep it positive.

Sincerely,

Jane
